Will There Be A 'High School Musical 4'?

This weekend, High School Musical 3 debuted in movie theaters nationwide and took the top spot at the box office, bringing in $42 million. The success of High School Musical 3 only makes the possibility of High School Musical 4 more of a reality, though whether it would return to theaters or the Disney Channel would remain to be seen. Though many cast members stated in interviews that they would not return for a 4th movie, the 3rd ended with Ms. Darbus explaining at graduation that one East High senior would return to assist with the drama club the following year. Without Troy and Gabriella, can fans really stomach an entire movie centered around Tiara, Donny, and Rocketman?

High School Musical 3 ended with the the announcement from Ms. Darbus that Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) would return next fall to assist with the drama club. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Tisdale would return. She hasn't managed to land much outside of the Disney family with the exception of a bad horror movie co-starring washed up SNL actors. If she wants to maintain some fame, some relevance, and some form of a bank account, she's smart to stick with Sharpay as long as Disney will keep cranking out HSM movies.

While I understand that High School Musical 3 was only introducing new characters to set them up for a future movie, I still failed to connect with them in any way. Tiara was about one hundred times more obnoxious than Sharpay could ever hope to be and I certainly couldn't stomach 90 minutes of her strutting around East High as the queen bee. Donny was pretty non-factor in the film so it's tough to say how much I would enjoy seeing him as a lead character but I can speak about Rocketman. Though he's a pretty decent singer and mover, his goofy nature just made it hard to take him seriously and it's tough to picture him in any kind of serious scene.

Take a note, Disney. If you're going to continue on and make High School Musical 4, you need to secure at least 3 original cast members. They are more experienced, more talented, more interesting, and fans are more invested in them. Then, I'll consider throwing my support behind it.
